WALTHAM, Mass.-The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team (1-3-1, 1-1-0 AHA) fell to Bentley 3-2 in overtime tonight as the team split the two game series with the Falcons. The team will return to action on Friday Nov. 9 when the team heads to Army for a home at home match. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Pioneers would strike first as sophomore Matt Tugnutt would continue his strong season with a goal at 7:42 off assists by Jason Cotton and Jackson Barlient to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0. While the Pioneers only tallied six shots the entire first period they would lead the first in goals as just ten minutes later sophomore Alex Bates would score his first goal of the season off assists by captain Liam Clare and freshman Austin Magera to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead heading into the end of the first period.
Bentley would respond in the second period as the Falcons would cut the SHU lead to one with a goal by Dylan Petira at 2:35 in the second to make the score 2-1. The Pioneers would attempt to increase the lead to two as SHU would fire off a total of nine shots but none would be able to find the net keeping the score 2-1 in favor of SHU heading into the third period.
The Falcons would continue the momentum heading into the third as they would come back to tie the game up at two following a goal by Jake Kauppila at 10:36. After the Bentley goal, neither team would be able to score sending the game into overtime. In overtime it would be Bentley that would score the game winner while on the power-play courtesy of Drew Callin at 3:06.
