BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team came back from two goals down to tie Canisius by a final score of 3-3. The team looks to take the two-game set tomorrow afternoon. Puck-drop is set for 1:05 p.m.
The Pioneers would jump off to impressive early start as immediately after SHU won the opening faceoff junior Jason Cotton would fire a shot passed the goalie off an assist by sophomore Marc Johnstone to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead just 16 seconds into the game.
Cotton's goal was his fourth of the season holding his position as the top scorer on the team. Johnstone's assist was his sixth of the season and keeps his position as the teams assist leader.
Canisius would answer right back just two minutes later at 2:58, Kevin Obssuth would slip a goal passed the netminder freshman Josh Benson to even the score a 1-1. The Pioneers outshot the Golden Griffs 17-14 in the first period as well in shots on goal 8-7.
Canisius take the lead back the second period as they would be able to tally two goals in the period. The first goal came at 3:30 courtesy of Dylan McLaughlin while the second came six minutes later at 9:42 off the stick of Nick Hutchinson.
SHU would make a comeback as senior Zach De Concilys would fire a shot passed the goaltender off an assist by freshman Austin Magera at 13:37 to reduce the Canisius lead to just one and to make the score 3-2.
Both Goehring and De Concilys scored their goals of the season. The Pioneers continued to outshoot the Golden Griffs as SHU took a total of 22 shots just in the second period while Canisius tallied 13.
Neither team would be able to score in the third period as the Pioneers would attempt to get a game winner on 20 shots taken to send the game into overtime.
The Pioneers would only be able to attempt one shot in the entire overtime period while Canisius attempted three and two on goal. But neither found the back of the net ending the game in a tie.
