BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team fell to Canisius on a last minute goal by a final score of 3-2. The team will return to action on Friday Nov. 30 when the Pioneers host Robert Morris. Puck-drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
The Pioneers would get off to another fast start as sophomore forward Jordan Kaplan would fire a shot passed the goaltender off assists by freshman Ryan Steele and junior Max Luuko to give SHU a 1-0 lead at 6:56. Strong defense by both sides would halt the scoring momentarily as it wouldn't be until the SHU power-play at 17:49 where sophomore Marcel Godbout would double his career scoring record with a goal off assists by freshman Austin Magera and senior co-captain Liam Clare to help give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Canisius would tally a goal in the closing seconds of the period to make the score 2-1 Pioneers at the end of one.
The second period would be all defense as neither team would be able to tally a goal keeping the game at 2-1 in favor of the Pioneers. While there were no goals scored in the period the shot totals were greater as SHU tallied 21 shots in the period while Canisius had 13. Through the first two periods, senior netminder Brett Magnus recorded 17 saves on 18 shots faced.
In the third, Canisius would be able to score a pair of goals the first coming at 4:14 while the Golden Griffs were on the power-play to tie the game up at 2-2. The Pioneers would attempt to score a goal to tie the game up as they tallied 14 shots but the shots would not be able to turn into goals. Canisius would score the final goal of the game in at 19:45 to eventually give Canisius the 3-2 victory.
