Setting the Scene.... The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team hit the road and continue Atlantic Hockey Association play as the Pioneers face off against Robert Morris for a two-game series. The first game is set for 7:05 p.m. on Friday while Saturday's game will be played at 4:05 p.m.
Last Time Out...The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team concluded its non-conference slate with an 2-1 victory over in-state rival UCONN Wednesday night. With the win, the Pioneers picked up their eighth victory of the season to improve to 8-13-3 overall this season while picking up the team's first non-conference victory of the year. Sophomore Matt Tugnutt and freshman Ryan Steele netted the two goals for the Pioneers to give them the eventual 2-1 victory.
Scouting the Colonials... The Colonials are coming off a two game sweep as Robert Morris fell to Air Force on January 25 and 26th by scores of 3-1, and 3-1. The Colonials are currently tied for seventh place in the Atlantic Hockey league standings with a conference record of 8-11-1 and an overall record of 9-16-2. On offense the Colonials are led by senior forward Alex Tonge who leads the team in points with 19 and goals with nine. In goal, junior Francis Marotte tallies a record of 8-12-1 and compiles a GAA of 3.11with a save percentage of 90.1.
Last Meeting....The Pioneers fell to Robert Morris on Dec. 1 2018 by a final score of 2-1 in overtime. The Colonials were able to walk out of Bridgeport with a split series as the previous night the Pioneers tallied their first win in program history against Robert Morris winning by a final score of 2-1. Sophomore Matt Tugnutt scored the opening goal for the Pioneers in the second period while freshman Austin Magera netted the game winner for the Pioneers at 15:46 in the third to give SHU the victory.
Steeling the Show...Freshman Ryan Steele has been the top goal scorer for the Pioneers as he tallied his seventh goal of the season against UCONN on Wednesday night. He currently is second on team in points with 13 and tied for fourth on team in assists with six.
Leave The Shorties to Magera... Freshman Austin Magera is currently tied for first in Atlantic Hockey in shorthanded goals this season as he has tallied four for the Pioneers. Magera currently leads the team in points with 16 and is tied for second in goals with six as well as tied for second in assists with 10.
Tugnutt Back on Track .... Sophomore Matt Tugnutt scored his first goal in the past eight games coming into this weekends series with Robert Morris. Tugnutt netted a shorthanded goal in the first period to put the Pioneers up 1-0 against UCONN on Wednesday night. currently is tied for second on team in goals with six.
Boyagian Named Atlantic Hockey Rookie of The Week... Freshman Nick Boyagian was named Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week for his performances against Holy Cross in the teams last series. The first year compiled a total of three points which consisted of a goal and two assists. In the fifteen games he has played this season, Boyagian has tallied three goals, three assists for a total of six points. This is the first weekly award the freshman has been awarded this year.
