INDIANAPOLIS, IN.- Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey first-year Austin Magera and sophomore Matt Tugnutt were named NCAA statistical champions as Magera was number one in the country in game-winning goals while Tugnutt was named the statistical champion in short-handed goals.
Magera was the top goal scorer and points leader for the Pioneers this season as he tallied 14 goals on 13 assists for a total of 27 points while netting seven game winners on the year earning him honors to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie team and the Atlantic Hockey Third Team All-Conference.
Tugnutt had an impressive season as well tallying nine goals on nine assists for 18 points. He netted three short-handed goals on the year to make him the top short-handed goal scorer in the country.
The Pioneers had an record breaking 2018-19 season as SHU clinched a first-round bye in the Atlantic Hockey Playoffs for the first time since the 2009-10 season when the Pioneers advanced all the way to the Atlantic Hockey Championship game. SHU was defeated in the Atlantic Quarterfinals against RIT as the team concluded the season with a 16-17-2 overall record and an 15-13-3 record in Atlantic Hockey play.
