FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team returns home to kick-off Atlantic Hockey play against conference champion AIC for a 7:05 p.m. single game puck-drop at Webster Bank Arena.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers dropped a two-game series to Penn State falling in the first game on Friday night 8-2, while a late third period comeback fell just short as SHU was down 4-0 heading into the third period before the Pioneers were able to tally four goals but the Nittany Lions were able to score one as well resulting in a 5-4 loss to #13 Penn State. Senior Jason Cotton recorded two goals in the game while senior Vito Bavaro and sopohore Austin Magera each tallied one in the period as well.
Last Meeting... SHU concluded the 2018-19 regular season at AIC as they faced the Yellow Jackets on March 2, 2019. The Pioneers fell to AIC by a final score of 4-1. Current sophomore Todd Goehring scored the lone goal for the Pioneers early in the first-period but the Yellow Jackets overpowered SHU scoring four goals including two in the third period to take the 4-1 victory.
Scouting The Yellow Jackets... AIC is most recently coming off a two game series against top ranked Quinnipiac this past weekend. The Yellow Jackets dropped both games to the Bobcats by scores of 3-2, and 3-2. AIC on the offensive front is led by senior Blake Christensen who tallied 16 goals with 31 assists for a total of 47 points. He currently has one goal on the year for the Yellow Jackets. In front of the net, AIC is led by Zackarias Skog who currently has a GAA of 3.13 with 47 saves and a save percentage of .887.
Tugnutt on Path Towards a Career Year... Junior forward Matt Tugnutt currently leads the Pioneers and Atlantic Hockey with four goals on the season. Last season as a sophomore he recorded nine goals in the 30 games played while in his freshman season he recorded seven goals on 17 assists for 24 points. If Tugnutt continues leading the way for the Pioneers, he could make a big impact for the Pioneers in the 2019-20 season. Tugnutt tallied his fourth goal of the year at Penn State on Friday night while before Penn State he tallied his first career hatrick recording three goals against in-state rival UCONN in the Pioneers season opener.
Cotton Not Soft at Penn State.....Senior captain Jason Cotton had an impressive weekend at Penn State as in the SHU four goal surge in the third period on Saturday Cotton tallied two goals for the Pioneers as SHU fell just short to the Nittany Lions in game two by a final score of 5-4. The 6'3 forward currently has five points this season which is tied for second in Atlantic Hockey and currently has three assists on the year which is also tied for second in the conference.
SNY Announces Matchups For Inaugural Connecticut Ice Festival... SNY announced the collegiate matchups for the inaugural Connecticut Ice Festival, a first-of-its-kind weekend hockey festival, celebrating youth, amateur and collegiate hockey in the state of Connecticut. Anchoring the weekend will be the first-ever tournament of Connecticut's four NCAA Division I Men's Collegiate hockey teams Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, University of Connecticut and Yale University. They will square off in a two-round, four game tournament on Saturday, January 25 and Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT. SHU will face Yale in the opening round on January, 25, 2020 at 7:30 p.m.
