FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart men's lacrosse redshirt senior attack Joe Saggese was named the Northeast Conference Men's Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Saggese earns his second career NEC Player of the Week honor following a seven-point outburst to help lift the Pioneers to a come-from-behind road win at Providence on Saturday. In the victory, Saggese matched his career-high with seven points on four goals and three assists to go along with three ground balls and one caused turnover.
Needing a lift with his team trailing 10-5 at the half to the Friars, Saggese either scored or assisted on four straight Pioneer goals to open the second half and help start a 5-0 run that swung momentum and led to the 17-16 comeback victory.
For the season, Saggese leads the team and the NEC in goals (16) and points (28) while ranking second in assists (12). His 5.60 points per game average sits 10th in the nation while he also ranks 22nd in goals per game (3.20) and 13th in assists per game (2.40). Owner of the nation's second-longest active goal scoring streak (29 games), Saggese has netted a hat trick in three of five games to start 2019 and is already more than halfway to his personal single-season assist record (22) set last season.
The Pioneers and Saggese are back in action on Tuesday, March 5 as SHU takes a trip to face Stony Brook with a 3 PM start.
