SOMERSET, N.J. – Sacred Heart men's lacrosse redshirt senior attack Joe Saggese was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Saggese becomes the first two-time NEC Player of the Week award winner this season while this represents the third such honor in Saggese's career. With Max Tuttle's NEC Player of the Week award last week, the Pioneers have had a player honored as the NEC Player of the Week in three of the six weeks thus far in the season.
The NEC's leader in points continued to produce at an elite level as Saggese racked up six points, finishing with three goals and three assists to go along with two ground balls. This was Saggese's fifth time in eight games this season registering at least six points in a single-game. With the game tied at the half, Saggese racked up four of his six points in the second half alone, including his fourth goal that ignited a crucial 5-1 run to send SHU past the defending NEC Champion Robert Morris.
Saggese now has back-to-back six-point games after going for five goals and one assist in last Saturday's win at Hartford. Over the Pioneers' four-game win streak, Saggese has racked up 21 points (12 goals, nine assists) and 10 ground balls. The redshirt senior attack has 42 points on the season with 24 goals and 18 assists and is currently on-pace to shatter Tuttle's all-time single-season points record of 64 set last season.
The Pioneers (5-3, 1-0 NEC) and Saggese continue conference play on Saturday at home against Hobart in a matchup pitting the top two scoring offenses in the NEC against one another.
