(Fairfield, CT) – James Stamopoulos scored twice and added an assist, as the Hartford Hawks defeated the Sacred Heart University Men's Soccer team 3-0 Tuesday at Campus Field.

Stamopoulos scored the game's first goal a bending drive over the wall of defenders on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 26th minute.  Ten minutes later, he set up the Hawks for a second goal on a perfectly timed corner kick from the left, which Anthony Santaga headed in.

Marcello Castro (Panama, Brazil) had three opportunities in the second half to get Sacred Heart on the board.  In the 55th minute, he broke down the left side past the defense but could not settle the ball for a good shot and shanked it wide to the left.  Three minutes later, the Pioneers were awarded a penalty kick, which Castro took.  He went for a low left shot, but Hartford goal-keeper Luke Citriniti made a diving save.   Moments later, Citriniti stopped Castro again on a fast-break drive from about twenty yards out.

Stamopoulos broke the game open with another free kick from 20 yards out, driving it to the right of the defensive wall on a low bounding shot inside the far post in the 62nd minute.

Citrinity made four saves to earn the shutout.

The Pioneers play next on Friday, September 30 when they travel to Robert Morris to begin Northeast Conference play at 4:00 p.m.
