Arribas scores first goal of the season while SHU ties UMASS 1-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn- The Sacred Heart men's soccer team (0-1-1 overall, 0-0 NEC) tied with UMASS (0-1-1 overall, 0-0 A10) 1-1 on Monday afternoon. Alejandro Arribas scored his first goal of the season for SHU.  The team returns to action on September 3 when they host Manhattan. Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m. 

The Pioneers would attack early in the first half as a shot by Segundo Navarro went wide just missing the post in the first minute of the game. The shots would run wild in the first half as SHU outshot UMASS 14 to 8 while the Pioneers also edged the Minutemen in cornerkicks as well five to three. Multiple blocked shots by both sides would conclude the first half with the match scoreless at 0-0. Junior goalie Robert Strain would make all his five saves in the first half which aided in the score remaining scoreless. 

The second half would begin with a quick shot by UMASS that went high. Then in the same 49 minute, Altin Celaj would take a shot that was blocked leading to a corner kick for SHU but was unsuccessful in producing a goal. Then in the 63rd minute Alejandro Arribas would give the Pioneers the lead off an assist by C.J. Weinstein and Altin Celaj to find the back of the net putting SHU ahead 1-0. The Minutemen would comeback to tie the game up at one as a goal by DeAndre Brown at 85:12 would conclude regulation to take the game into overtime. 

SHU would have the only shots in the first overtime as they recorded three shots but none would find the net sending the game into a second overtime. Neither team would score in the second overtime as both teams combined only three shots in the second overtime thus keeping the score at 1-1 closing in a tie. 

The team returns to action on September 3 when they host Manhattan. Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m.
