Goals by Navarro and Raposo propels Pioneers to first victory of the season over Manhattan 2-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's soccer team (1-1-1 overall, 0-0 NEC) defeated Manhattan (3-1-0 overall, 0-0 MAAC) by a score of 2-1 this afternoon. This is the first win for the Pioneers this season. The team returns to action on Saturday Sept. 8 when they travel to face Saint Joseph's. Game-time is set for 7:00 p.m.

SHU would get the ball rolling in the first half as they produced a total of nine shots just in the first half. Two of those shots went a minute apart as Oscar Curras and CJ Weinstein each attempted shots at 31:25 and 32:55 respectively but both would either have their shot blocked or was wide right. Then at 33:33, Altin Celaj would take a shot at the goal but it was also wide. Not long after the Pioneers would find the net courtesy of a goal by Segundo Navarro at 36:49 off an assist by Oscar Curras to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Then three minutes later at 39:33 Renan Raposo would also find his first goal of the season to put SHU ahead 2-0 at the conclusion of the first half. 

In the second half, SHU would hold a strong defensive front as Manhattan would fire off a total of twelve shots in the second. Junior Robert Strain would come up with three saves in the second half while the rest of the Pioneer defense would hold off the Jaspers until the 80thminute. Manhattan would squeak in a goal at 80:17 by Adrien Awana but SHU would hold off the Jaspers from scoring another goal to walk away with the 2-1 victory. 

With the win SHU improves to 1-1-1 overall while Manhattan fell to 3-1-0.
