Pioneers Score Twice in 4-2 Loss to Saint Francis

FAIRFIELD, Conn- The Sacred Heart University Men's Soccer team (1-7-1 overall, 0-1 NEC) fell to Saint Francis (PA) (5-3-1 overall, 1-0 NEC) by a score of 4-2 this afternoon. The team returns to on Sunday Sept. 30 when they host Robert Morris. Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m. 

The Pioneers would attempt the first shot of the game as Arnaud Deniel would launch a shot at 9:19 but would be saved by the goalie keeping the score 0-0. It would the Red Flash would get on the board first as Mario Mastrangelo would find the net to give Saint Francis a 1-0 lead at 26:34. SHU would answer back as Oscar Curras would launch a goal off an assist by Sungdo Navarro to tie the game up at 1-1 at 38:25. The goal would be Curras's second of the season. Neither team would be able to take the lead at the end of half keeping the score tied heading into the second. 

The second half would begin with another goal scored by Mastrangelo this time at 54:34 to give the Red Flash a 2-1 lead. Saint Francis would edge the Pioneers in shots taken in the second half 13 to eight. After the Red Flash fired off three consecutive shots that would either be saved by goalie Robert Strain or would go wide right, they would be able to slip another goal passed at 77:57 as Tulio Canineu would give the Red Flash a 3-1 lead. The Pioneers would attempt a comeback as Alejandro Arribas would launch a goal for SHU off an assist by Altin Celaj at 81:04 to tighten the score to 4-2. But that would be the final goal of the game would be courtesy of the Red Flash's Kevin Smolyn as the Pioneers would fall 4-2.  

Notes: 

First Half

  • The Red Flash would get on the board first as Mario Mastrangelo would find the net to give Saint Francis a 1-0 lead at 26:34. SHU edged SFU in shots 11 to 10 in the first half. 
  • SHU would answer back as Oscar Curras would launch a goal off an assist by Sungdo Navarro to tie the game up at 1-1 at 38:25. 
  • Both teams were even in shots in the first half at six shots a piece.  

Second Half

  • The second half would begin with another goal scored by Mastrangelo this time at 54:34 to give the Red Flash a 2-1 lead.
  • Saint Francis would edge the Pioneers in shots taken in the second half 13 to eight.
  • The Red Flash fired off three consecutive shots that would either be saved by goalie Robert Strain or would go wide right befor they would be able to slip another goal passed at 77:57 as Tulio Canineu would give the Red Flash a 3-1 lead.
  • The final goal of the game would be courtesy of The Red Flash's Kevin Smolyn as the Pioneers would fall 4-2.
