Men’s Track & Field Competes in the Yale Springtime Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In the final tune-up prior to the 2019 NEC Championships, the Sacred Heart men's track and field team took part in the Yale Springtime Invitational on Sunday. The Pioneers dominated the throwing events, scoring victories in the shot put and javelin, while Michael Kearns was an individual standout as he tossed personal-records in the two events he competed.

  • Michael Kearns was the star of the day for SHU, posting personal-records in both the shot put (16.57m) and hammer throw (45.14)
  • Kearns' throw of 16.57m in the shot put topped the field while the mark met both New England and IC4A qualifying standards and ranks second-best in the NEC this season
  • Liam McDade continued the Pioneers' dominating of the throwing events as he tossed a personal-best 37.22m to take the victory in the javelin
  • Cameron Croce picked up a third place finish in the hammer throw as he tossed 51.10m
  • Michael Somoza clocked in at 11.25 seconds, just 0.01 seconds of his personal-best, to finish third in the 100m dash
  • Corry Brinken joined Somoza in the 100m and clocked in at a personal-best time of 11.58 to claim eighth place out of 23 sprinters
  • SHU's 4x100m relay crossed the line in 42.59 seconds, just 0.05 seconds off a season-best, as the Pioneers' grouping of Somoza, Quaheem Dufane, Devon Guerrier-Heyward and Brandon Park placed second out of seven teams

This meet served as the final tune-up for SHU prior to the 2019 NEC Championships held from May 4-5 on the campus of Central Conn. St. in New Britain.
