Men's Volleyball Falls to Purdue Fort Wayne, 3-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Purdue Fort Wayne Friday evening at the Pitt Center. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Mastodons improve to 5-4 on the year.

Emerson Waumans led the Pioneers with 12 kills and hit .207 on the night. Noah Ricchetti led SHU with 36 assists and Tim McIntosh added 14 digs in the loss.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they host Ball State at the Pitt Center.

First Set: SHU 25, IPFW 19

  • The teams traded points early with Purdue Fort Wayne holding a 10-8 lead

  • With the score tied at 15-15, SHU went on a 4-1 run, sparked by back-to-back blocks from Niah Ricchetti

  • After the Mastodons cut the SHU lead to 19-17, the Pioneers went on a 4-0 run to take a 23-17 lead and forcing a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout

  • After Purdue Fort Wayne cut the deficit to 24-19, the Mastodons committed a service error to give SHU the set

Second Set: IPFW 25, SHU 23

  • SHU jumped out to an early 5-2 lead

  • The Mastodons responded with a 7-3 run of their own to take a 9-8 lead

  • With the score tied at 11-11, the two sides traded points to a 21-21 tie

  • SHU was able to pull ahead to 23-21 after a service error and a Taylor Bloomquist kill

  • Purdue Fort Wayne closed the set with a 4-0 run to tie the match at 1-1

Third Set: IPFW 25, SHU 21

  • SHU took advantage of a strong start and jumped out to a slim 10-8 lead

  • After SHU pushed its lead to 12-9, Purdue Fort Wayne battled to tie the contest at 16-16

  • A SHU service error gave Purdue Fort Wayne a 17-16 lead that it would not relinquish

  • Leading 21-19, the Mastodons closed the set with a 4-2 run, to secure the set 25-21

Fourth Set: IPFW 25, SHU 16

  • The two sides traded points to an early 4-4 tie

  • A kill from Tony Price gave the Mastodons a 5-4 lead it would not relinquish

  • Purdue Fort Wayne built the lead to 8-5 before SHU cut the deficit to 10-8

  • The Mastodons followed with a 9-3 run to take a commanding 19-11 lead

  • After a SHU run cut the deficit to 21-15, Purdue Fort Wayne closed the match with a 4-1 run to take the match
