Women’s Fencing Opens Season at NEIFC Fall Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Sacred Heart women's fencing team opened up the 2019-20 season on Saturday at the NEIFC Fall Invitational held at Smith College. Daria Rudakova was the standout on the day for the Pioneers as she claimed sixth place in the epee event.

After breezing through pool play, out touching her opponents by a combined +18 margin, Rudakova earned the top seed heading into the single-elimination tournament round of the epee. Rudakova then toppled Lyric Lott in the round of 32 by a score of 15-12 and Madeleine Vibert in the round of 16 by a 15-10 margin. Playing in the quarterfinals, Rudakova ultimately fell by a tight 15-12 margin to Cosima Martus of Boston College.

Sophie Witek showed well in the sabre event as she earned the No. 9 seed after posting a +11 differential in pool play. Witek went on to defeat Therese Mills of MIT in the round of 32 before falling in the round of 16 to Kristen Palmer of MIT.

In the foil event, Florentia Petrides performed well in the poll play round as she owned a +14 advantage which gave her the No. 14 seed. Petrides went on to defeat Allison Smith of Smith College by a 15-1 margin before falling in the round of 32 to earn 16th place overall.
