Women's Golf In Second Place After Opening Round Of NEC Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fl.— The defending Northeast Conference Champion Sacred Heart University women's golf team is in second place after the opening round at the 2018 NEC Women's Golf Championship held at LPGA International.

SHU has all five golfers within the top-20 including three in the top-10 through the opening 18. Senior Abigail Hood is tied for first with a five-over par after carding a 78. The two-time All-NEC second teamer picked up two birdies on the day on par-five eighth & the par three 12th hole, she ended the day with five straight pars.

Senior Alejandra Perez is tied for fifth overall with a seven-over 80 in round one. Perez shook off a double-bogey on nine with a birdie on 10 before finishing the second half three-over par to sit in the top five. Junior Chelsea Sedlar is tied for ninth place after she finished 10-over par with an opening round of 77.

Senior Lauren Pelster carded a score of 84 in her second appearance at the NEC Championship to tie for 12th on the leaderboard. Sophomore Ana Contreras rounded out the Pioneers scoring group with a score of 13-over par to tie for 19th overall in her first championship round.

The Pioneers sit five strokes behind Fairleigh Dickinson, who sits at 28-over par after round one. Saint Francis U is third at +37, followed by Wagner (+49) and LIU Brooklyn (+50).

SHU will begin the second-round tomorrow morning beginning at 9:50 a.m.
