Sacred Heart University seniors Abigail Hood and Joseph Choiniere were named Northeast Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year, announced by the NEC office on Tuesday. The award is presented to the male and female student-athletes with the highest GPA who are graduating and have exhausted their athletic eligibility. Both Hood and Choiniere graduated from SHU with 3.98 GPA.
Hood capped her collegiate playing career earlier this spring by earning her third All-NEC Second Team selection. Hood posted four top-10 finishes including three in the top-five with a scoring average of 81.1. Hood recorded a two-round score of 153 to tie for fourth at the Lonnie Barton Invitational. She capped her career with her third career top-five finish at the NEC Championships finishing tied for fourth overall. She helped lead the Pioneers to their first-ever NEC Championship, in 2017.
Hood, a captain on the women's golf team, was presented the John Croffy Award at the 26th Annual Senior Awards Brunch, presented annually to the graduating male and female student-athlete with the top GPA in the senior class. She was also inducted into the C. Donald Cook Scholar-Athlete Society. Hood graduated with degrees in Sociology and Education.
Choiniere, a men's lacrosse team captain, earned his degree in Finance and earned the John Croffy Award at the Awards Brunch as well. He played in every game in the midfield for the Pioneers this spring and helped SHU earn its second consecutive postseason berth. He finished his senior campaign with 13 ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
