CANTON, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team defeated SUNY Canton this afternoon by a final score of 3-1. The team will look for the two game sweep to improve to thirteen wins on the season tomorrow. Puck-drop is set for 1:00 p.m.
The first period would be all Pioneers as last week's NEWHA freshman of the week Samantha Shoebottom would score the opening goal for the Pioneers off a pair of assists by Lilly Cleary and Kelly Solak to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead at 16:24. The Pioneers outshot the Roos seven to four in the first period.
In the second, it would be all defense as neither team would be able to net a goal as the teams combined for just 14 shots in the period as all would be saved by the goalies on each side keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of the Pioneers heading into the third period.
Shoebottom would continue her impressive day as she netted her second goal of the day at 4:12 to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead off a pair of assists by Cleary and Lexi Edwards. Just three minutes later, Cleary would move from assists to goal scoring as she would net the teams third goal of the afternoon this time off assists by Nicole Guidi and Maddie Bishop to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead at 7:24. SUNY Canton would score a goal at 14:45 to make the final score 3-1.
