Women's Ice Hockey Shuts Out Post 11-0

SHELTON, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team earned their fifth NEWHA Conference victory tonight after defeating Post University by a final score of 11-0. This is the second time this season the Pioneers have scored in double digits and also the seventh time this season SHU has shut out an opponent. The Pioneers will return to action on Friday, February 1 when the Pioneers travel to Franklin Pierce. Puck-drop is set for 7:30 p.m.

First Period

  • The Pioneers would tally seven goals in the first period as the first came off the stick of senior Haley Payne just :50 seconds into the first period unassisted to give SHU an early 1-0 lead.
  • Five minutes later at 5:09 sophomore Lexi Edwards would score her first goal of the game off an assist by senior Lilly Cleary to put the Pioneers up 2-0
  • Then it would be freshman Kennedy Spiering's turn to score for the Pioneers as she banked in a pair of unassisted goals at 9:06 and 13:14 to put SHU up 4-0.
  • A pair of goals by junior Jayne Lewis at 18:45 and 19:24 plus a goal off the stick of freshman Anna Klein would conclude the period with SHU up 7-0.

 

Second Period 

  • The Pioneers would continue firing the puck in the second period as they would outshoot the Eagles 21-4 in the second period.
  • Only one goal would be scored in the entire period as freshman Anna Klein would her second goal of the game on the SHU power play to put the Pioneers up 8-0 at the end of the second period.
  • Head Coach Thomas O'Malley would also switch goalies in the second as freshman Frankie Sanchez would get her tenth appearance on the ice and would tally four saves on four shots and allow no goals.

 

Third Period

  • SHU would tally three more goals in the third period the first coming at 7:56 in the period off the stick of Lewis to give her three goals on the day and to put the Pioneers ahead 9-0.
  • The second goal of the period would come on the SHU power play as senior Katie Stueve would receive the puck from Edwards at 8:32 in the period and fire in a goal to put the Pioneers up 10-0.
  • Then the final goal of the game would come at 18:30 in the period when Edwards would want a piece of the action as she nabbed a goal in off a pair of assists by Jordan Sanislo and freshman Samantha Shoebottom to make the final score 11-0.
  • Sophomore netminder Kayla Walewski would start and finish the third period and would tally four saves on four shots.
