Lewis's Two-Goals Propel Women's Ice Hockey to 4-1 Victory Over Saint Michael's

SHELTON, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team picked up its sixth straight NEWHA conference win this afternoon as the Pioneers defeated Saint Michael's at home by a final score of 4-1. SHU looks for the two game sweep tomorrow when they host the Purple Knights for a 2:30 p.m. puck-drop.


First Period

  • Both defenses prevailed in the opening period as both sides were held to single digit shots on goal in the period as SHU took seven while Saint Michael's was held to just five.
  • The Pioneers were the first team to get on the board as a goal off the stick off first-year Sophie Lupone off a pass from fellow first-year Cassandra Nevers put SHU ahead 1-0 8:28 into the period.
  • But the Purple Knights evened the score up just twenty seconds later as an unassisted goal in the open lane by Maeghan Kennard closed made the game all tied up at 1-1.
  • Senior Jayne Lewis had answered back in the closing minutes of the first as she found the back of the net off a breakaway 17:11 into the game to close the period with SHU up 2-1.


Second Period

  • Neither team scored in the second period as the Pioneers fired off nine shots while Saint Michael's was only able to record six.
  • The SHU defense held strong again in the second period as they held off the Purple Knight's power-play as they went 0-2 in the period.


Third Period

  • The pucks started flying in for the Pioneers in the final period as senior Maddie Bishop cashed in her sixth goal of the year while SHU was shorthanded just 6:16 into the period to give the Pioneers a commanding 3-1 lead.
  • Then in the closing minutes of the period, 17:07 in Lewis nailed her 11th goal of the year and second of the game off an assist by junior Jordan Sanislo to give SHU the eventual 4-1 victory.
  • The Pioneers hit double-digit shots in the period as they tallied 13 while the defense held up Saint Michael's to just five.



  • Senior Jayne Lewis tallied two goals in the game in the Pioneers win.
  • Senior Maddie Bishop recorded her sixth goal of the year which broke open the Pioneers lead in the third.
  • First-year Sophie Lupone recorded her second goal of the year.
  • Junior Kayla Walewski tallied her first win of the year with 15 saves on 16 shots faced.
  • SHU improves to 9-10-0 overall and 7-2-0 in NEWHA play.
