Women's Rowing Takes First in Novice 8 at Tail of the Housatonic Meet

Shelton, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University Women's Rowing team opened its 2018-2019 season on Saturday hosting in-state rival Fairfield University and Iona College. The Pioneers posted entries for the Varsity 4, the Varsity 8, and the Novice 8.

The varsity 4 placed second (21:19) behind Fairfield (20:35) and edged out Iona (21:48). The Pioneers' boat consisted of Danielle Varley, Sara Totura, Isabella Michelucci, Caroline Bollentino, and coxswain Ellie Micallef.

Fairfield's two entries for the Varsity 8 finished in the top two spots, while SHU crossed the line in third. The Pioneers' time of 21:32 was behind the efforts of Taylor Alviar, Katie Graham, Kallipoi Gatzoflias, Olivia Gastaldo, Juliana Kimberlin, Sophie Lattanzio, Mary Brady, Christina Hardman, and coxswain Julia Francese.

SHU's novice 8 enjoyed success in the season opener securing first place with a time of 22:29. The Pioneers' entry was compromised of Denisse Rodriguez, Vanessa Rodas-Dehollan, Kristen Duffy, Brianna Costanza, Christine Thorp, Kasey Mascia, Bailey Marzec, Izabella Rosenberg, and coxswain Gianna Rodrigues. Fairfield followed with a time of 23:32.

The Pioneers heads on the road to compete in the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia. The first race is set to go off at 9:00 am.
