FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sacred Heart University head women's rowing coach Nicoleta Mantescu and assistant coach Jaclyn Smith announced on Thursday that Danielle Varely and Caroline Bolletino have been named team captains for the 2018-19 season.
Varely transferred to SHU for her sophomore campaign after spending a season at division-rival Iona. Varely was the bow seat of the 4+ that the Pioneers sent to the 2017 Head of the Charles Regatta, the world's largest international head race. Varely has also competed at the Head of the Houch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and has multiple medals from both the Fall and Spring Metropolitan Championships and SHU Invitational.
"Since joining us her sophomore year, Danielle has become one of our strongest and most versatile players," Smith said. "She has a great head on her shoulders and is extremely focused, not only on the water, but also off of it and in the classroom. It's not surprising to see her excelling in the leadership roll of captain, this is only the beginning of her success and what she is able to do."
Bolletino was tabbed as a top recruit from the signing class of 2016. Since becoming a Pioneer, Bolletino has worked herself into nearly every top boat, rowing both sides. Bolletino has won multiple medals from both the Fall and Spring Metropolitan Championships and SHU Invitational.
"From the first time I met Caroline, I knew that she was going to be a great asset to our team. Her rowing background was impressive, but what really put her ahead of other recruits was her personality," Smith said. "Caroline has a great attitude and never hesitates to step up when asked to change seats or to try something out of her comfort zone. The team has really benefited from her being named captain and we are extremely excited that she is still only a junior."
The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 27, when SHU hosts Fairfield for the SHU Scare.
