Softball Picks Up Two Victories on Day Two of Mason Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va.- The Sacred Heart University Softball Team (11-8 overall, 0-0 NEC) took two games at the Mason Invitational this morning as the Pioneers took the first game over Cornell 4-2 and the second against George Mason 5-1. The team concludes the Mason Invite tomorrow when they will face Cornell one more time for an 11:00 a.m. first pitch.

 

Game One

Cornell 2, Sacred Heart 4

 

The Scoring

  • Bottom of the 3rd- Junior Katelyn Christian would rip a single to right field scoring in senior Hailey Desrosiers to put SHU ahead 1-0.
  • Top of the 4th- Cornell would even the score a Erin Rockstroh would ground out scoring in the runner from third on a fielder's choice making the score 1-1.
  • Bottom of the 4th- The Pioneers would respond right back as senior Lindsey Spitz would single down the left field line scoring in sophomore Kylee Harvey to put the Pioneers back ahead 2-1.
  • Top of the 5th- An RBI double by Bridgette Rooney would score in Hannah Contreas to tie the game up 2-2.
  • Bottom of the 5th- But the Pioneers would fire right back as first-year Amy Petrovich would rip a single to first base scoring in two runs to give the Pioneers the 4-2 victory.

 

The Numbers

 

  • The Pioneers would outhit Cornell nine to six in the game.
  • Senior Kirsten McCann would tally the win for SHU going all seven innings giving up just one earned run on six hits and striking out five batters.
  • The Pioneers improve to 10-8 on the year while Cornell falls to 1-10.
  • Spitz would lead the way for the Pioneers in the batter's box going 3-3 at the plate with one RBI and a double.  

 

Game Two

Sacred Heart 5, George Mason 1

 

The Scoring

  • Top of the 1st- Junior Katelyn Christian would launch a solo homer down the left field line to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0.
  • Top of the 5th- Senior Stephanie Mangiameli would reach first on a throwing error scoring in two to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0.
  •  Bottom of the 6th- Marissa Butts would reach on a throwing error scoring in one to get the Patriots on the board and making the score 3-1 in favor of SHU
  • Top of the 7th- Christian would rip a single to right center scoring in senior Hailey Desrosiers to put the Pioneers ahead 4-1.
  • Top of the 7th- Junior Jennie Boisvert would score in Mangiameli from third on a fielder's choice to make the final score 5-1.

The Numbers

  • The Pioneers would outhit the Patriots 10 to four in the game.
  • Sophomore Shyanne Fennell would pick up the victory for the Pioneers going all seven innings giving up just one run on four hits and striking out six on 31 batters faced.
  • In the batter's box junior Katelyn Christian would lead the way for the Pioneers going 3-3 with a double and a homerun.
  • With the win the Pioneers improve to 11-8 overall on the season and now have won six of their last seven games.
