Softball Falls to Providence to Snap Four Game Winning Streak

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Sacred Heart University Softball team fell to Providence this afternoon by a final score of 12-1 in five innings. The Pioneers will return to action tomorrow when SHU hosts Hartford for the team's home opener of the season. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.

The Scoring

 

  • Top of the 3rd- After senior Stephanie Mangiameli ripped a triple a right field, she would later score on a wild pitch to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0.
  • Bottom of the 3rd- Nine of the 12 Friar runs would be scored in the bottom of the third as Vanessa Portillo would hit a two-run homer to put the Friars ahead 2-1.
  • Bottom of the 3rd- Allison Abbatiello would single to center field scoring one to put Providence up 3-1.
  • Bottom of the 3rd- Lauren Nunez would ground out scoring in one to put the Friars ahead 4-1.
  • Bottom of the 3rd- Emma Lee would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring one to increase Providence's lead to 5-1.
  • Bottom of the 3rd- Another RBI single to center field by Portillo would score in two more to put the Friars ahead 7-1.
  • Bottom of the 3rd- A two run double by Megan McCune would put Providence ahead 9-1 heading into the fourth.
  • Bottom of the 4th- A pair of singles followed a wild-pitch would score in three more for the Friars making the final score 12-1.

 

The Numbers

 

  • The Friars would outhit SHU 10 to three in the game.
  • Sophomore Kylee Harvey led the way for the Pioneers in hits as she went 2-2 at the plate.
  • Senior Kristen McCann would tally the loss going 2.2 innings, giving up 9 earned runs on five hits and striking out five.
