Volleyball Powers To 3-2 Win At Hartford

The Sacred Heart University volleyball team won for a fourth consecutive outing, defeating the University of Hartford in five sets. The Pioneers rallied with victories in the fourth and fifth set, to earn the 3-2 victory Sunday night. The Pioneers improve to 10-10 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 11-10

Liisel Nelis and Sarah Ciszek both recorded their 10th double-doubles of the season in the victory. Three Pioneers reached double-figures in kills and four accomplished the feat with digs on the night.  SHU also added a season-best 20 blocks, with two solo and 30 assisted blocks

The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Merrimack at the Pitt Center. The NEC match is set to begin at 6:00 pm.

Turning Point

  • Trailing two-sets to one and tied 8-8 in the fourth, Murawinski, Palanchi and Dole recorded three straight kills to pull away to win the set and even the match

By The Numbers

  • SHU hit .253 for the match, with 67 kills, while Hartford hit .169 and had 56 kills
  • Julia Murawinski led the Pioneers with 17 kills and hit .464 on the night
  • Makayla Dole hit .313 as she finished with 15 kills
  • Nelis added 13 kills and a team-best 20 digs
  • The Pioneers had 20 team blocks Sunday, led by nine from Gianna Scioletti
  • Ciszek handed out 56 assists to go along with 10 digs and four kills
  • Emma Smallcomb recorded 15 digs and Lilian Vargo added 11
  • Reghan Palanchi had eight blocks, Ciszek six and Murawinski five

First Set: Hartford 25, SHU 22

  • The Pioneers led by as many as three points, taking an 11-8 lead on a Scioletti kill
  • Hartford scored four consecutive points to take a 12-11 lead
  • The teams alternated points, with five ties, through 17-17 on a Maddie Lindsay kill for the Hawks
  • That point was the first of five consecutive points for the Hawks, building a 21-17 lead
  • Trailing 24-20 Murawinski and Reghan Palanchi recorded back-to-back kills to fend of two set points
  • After a Hawk timeous, Lindsay ended the set with a kill

Second Set: SHU 25, Hartford 15

  • Hartford led twice early, 1-0 and 2-1, before a Scioletti kill tied the match 2-2
  • That opened a 6-1 Pioneer run that was capped by kills from Dole and Murawinski for a 7-3 lead
  • The Hawks responded and pulled back within three, 11-8
  • A Dole kill on the next point started SHU on a 12-4 run that put the Pioneers in front 23-12 on the way to evening the match

Third Set: Hartford 25, SHU 23

  • Hartford scored four of the first six points of the set
  • After a Hawk service error, a Ciszek ace tied the set 4-4
  • SHU would build to a 10-6 advantage, before Hartford mounted a 5-1 run to take an 11-10 lead
  • Neither team was able to gain more than two points of separation, through the Pioneers leading 15-13
  • The Hawks tied the score after consecutive SHU hitting errors and after a Palanchi kill gave SHU a 16-15 lead, Hartford scored four unanswered to go in front, 19-16
  • Three straight kills from Dole, followed by a Hawk hitting error brought the Pioneers level at 23-23
  • Valerie Diede put the Hawks back in front with a kill and a SHU hitting error gave the Hawk

Fourth Set: SHU 25, Hartford 19

  • Six-ties highlighted the first 16 points of the fourth, the last at 8-8
  • Murawinski, Palanchi and Dole followed with kills that broke that last tie and put the Pioneers on a run that extended their lead to six, 19-13
  • Hartford battled back within two points, 19-17, but could get no closer as SHU finished the set with a 6-2 run

Fifth Set: SHU 15, Hartford 10

  • SHU never trailed in the final set, opening an 11-4 advantage
  • The Hawks were able to rally to within three, 13-10
  • Nelis kills at that point ended the match in the Pioneers favor
